Free camping (acampada libre) is not permitted in Spain, but the law distinguishes between parking and camping. Sleeping in your motorhome is allowed wherever parking is allowed, as long as nothing is placed outside the vehicle: no chairs, table or awning, no levelling legs extended and no waste water discharged. Do any of that and it counts as camping, with fines from 50 to over 600 euros. Nature reserves fall under separate rules and generally do not allow overnight stays. Municipalities may impose stricter local by-laws, so move on every 24 to 48 hours.

Watch the low-emission zones: every Spanish city with more than 50,000 inhabitants now has a ZBE. Foreign number plates cannot obtain a physical sticker and must register online in advance, including for Barcelona and Madrid. Cameras check automatically and fines are around 100 to 200 euros. In Barcelona the zone inside the ring roads applies on weekdays; from Friday 20:00 until Monday 07:00 the city is freely accessible.
