Denmark offers a surprising mix of wide North Sea beaches, cosy harbour towns, Viking history and the cosmopolitan buzz of Copenhagen. With a campervan you experience all of that at your own pace. The country is small and the distances between highlights are short — you can see a lot in a week, and with two weeks you could combine Denmark with southern Sweden across the Øresund Bridge. On this page we compare trip lengths and regions, and help you choose from our curated campervan route, drawn from 31 destinations and more than 175 campsites across Denmark.

Denmark campervan routes: 1 week, 10 days or 2 weeks

One of Denmark's strengths as a campervan destination is that you don't need to drive far to see a lot. The country is compact and the roads are excellent — ideal for both a short break and a longer motorhome tour. Below you'll find recommendations by trip length, from one week to a fortnight. All routes are fully customisable: add or remove stops and adjust the duration to match your plans.

    • 1 week — Jutland or Jutland + Funen

A week is plenty to explore Jutland from north to south: start at Skagen (the northernmost tip), drive via Løkken and Thy National Park to the west coast, and finish through Ribe — Denmark's oldest town — near the border. Or combine west Jutland with the island of Funen (Odense, picturesque villages). Distances are short: expect a maximum of 150 km per day.

Regions of Denmark: Jutland, Funen or Zealand?

Jutland is the largest part of Denmark and the most popular region for campervanners. The west coast offers endless sandy beaches, dunes and a rugged North Sea landscape — perfect for walks and surfing. In the north you'll find Skagen, where the North Sea and Baltic Sea meet. The interior surprises with heathland, the Limfjord area and cities like Aarhus (culture, the Moesgaard Museum) and Aalborg. In the south lies Ribe (the oldest town) and the Wadden Sea island of Rømø.

Funen (Fyn) is the "fairytale island" — birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen in Odense. The island is small and picturesque, with half-timbered houses, castles and rolling landscapes. Ideal to combine for a day or two with a Jutland route. The gardens at Egeskov Castle and the harbour towns of Faaborg and Svendborg are well worth a stop.

Funen — Hans Christian Andersen's fairytale island

Zealand (Sjælland) is where Copenhagen sits — the vibrant heart of Denmark. But the island offers more: the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde, the chalk cliffs of Møns Klint (one of the country's most beautiful natural spots), and the charming village of Dragør. If you're heading to Copenhagen by campervan, park at a campsite on the outskirts and take a bike or public transport into the centre.

Our recommendation: for a first campervan trip through Denmark, Jutland is the obvious choice — the most campsites, the most nature and directly accessible from the continent. Got more than a week? Add Funen or Zealand via the Storebælt Bridge.

    Travelling with kids

Denmark is exceptionally well suited for a campervan holiday with children, thanks to short driving distances, safe infrastructure and family-friendly campsites. Here's what makes it work:

    • Short drives: stops are close together, so children never need to sit in the campervan for long. Expect a maximum of 1–2 hours' driving per day.
    • Flat terrain: Denmark is ideal for cycling with children. Many campsites hire out bikes, including child seats and cargo bikes.
    • Safe campsites: Danish campsites are known for their excellent facilities — playgrounds, swimming pools, trampolines and child-friendly amenities.
    • Legoland Billund: the headline attraction for families. Combine a visit with a campervan route through Jutland.
    • Beaches: the wide sandy beaches along the west coast are perfect for children — shallow water, plenty of space and often lifeguarded in summer.

Combining Denmark with Sweden or Norway

Many travellers look for a Denmark and Sweden campervan route or a Denmark–Norway combination trip. That makes sense: the countries are close together and complement each other well. Two popular options:

    • Denmark + southern Sweden (2 weeks)

The Øresund Bridge takes you from Copenhagen to Malmö in 30 minutes. Combine a week in Denmark with a week in southern Sweden: Malmö, Helsingborg, the coast of Skåne and possibly Gothenburg. This is the most natural combination trip and perfect for two weeks.

    • Denmark + Norway (3+ weeks)

From Hirtshals you can sail to Norway — for example to Kristiansand (roughly 3 hours 15 minutes with Color Line). If you want to explore further into Norway, allow extra travel time. This combination works best for a longer trip of three weeks or more, where you combine the Danish coast with the Norwegian fjords. See also our Norway guide for routes and tips.

    Getting to Denmark by campervan

Denmark is one of the easiest Scandinavian countries to reach. The quickest route from the continent goes via northern Germany to Flensburg and across the border into Jutland. Allow 5 to 7 hours' driving from the Netherlands to the Danish border. From there you're in Kolding or Billund within an hour.

Want to head straight to Funen or Zealand? The Puttgarden–Rødby ferry (about 45 minutes) is a handy option. Drive via Hamburg to Puttgarden and sail across to the island of Lolland, from where you continue to Zealand and Copenhagen.

The Storebælt Bridge (Great Belt Bridge) in Denmark — connecting Funen and Zealand on your campervan route
The Storebælt Bridge — the impressive link to Copenhagen

Renting a campervan in Denmark? Copenhagen is the most popular pick-up location, followed by Billund (handy if you want to start via Legoland). A fly & drive is also possible: fly into Copenhagen and start your route from there.

Best time for a campervan trip to Denmark

The best period for a campervan holiday in Denmark runs from May through September. The climate is temperate — warmer than Norway, but don't expect heatwaves. Average summer temperatures sit around 18–22°C.

June and July are ideal: in June the days in Denmark are remarkably long, giving you plenty of flexibility. The sea along the west coast reaches a comfortable temperature, and all campsites are open. July is the busiest month, especially at the popular west-coast beaches and around Legoland.

August stays warm and crowds thin out slightly after the Danish school holidays. September is lovely for those seeking peace — fewer tourists, autumn colours and campsites still open. Along the west coast it can be quite windy, though.

Practical tips for your Denmark campervan trip

    • Distances are short: Denmark is compact — especially compared with Norway or Sweden. You can easily fit 2–3 stops into a day without feeling rushed. Plan a maximum of 150–200 km per day and you'll have plenty of time to enjoy each place.
    • Campsites and campervan pitches: Denmark has an excellent camping network with top-notch facilities: playgrounds, pools, kitchens and modern amenities. An increasing number of towns also offer autocamperplads — designated campervan pitches at harbours or town centres, often with electricity and water. Booking ahead is advisable in peak season on the west coast.
    • No wild camping: unlike Norway and Sweden, wild camping with a campervan is not permitted in Denmark. However, with so many affordable campsites and designated pitches, this is hardly a limitation.
    • Cycling: Denmark is flat and has an excellent cycle path network. Bring bikes on your campervan — in many places a bicycle is the best way to explore. In Copenhagen, cycling is by far the most practical way to get around.
    • Storebælt Bridge (Great Belt): if you're heading from Jutland/Funen to Zealand (Copenhagen), you'll cross this impressive bridge. The toll is roughly €40 for a campervan (one way). Payment by credit card or via a Bizz subscription.

How much does a campervan trip through Denmark cost?

Denmark is cheaper than Norway and comparable to the UK in terms of price level. With a campervan you bring your accommodation and kitchen with you, which makes a noticeable difference. The main cost items:

    • Campsites: expect €20–35 per night for a pitch with electricity and facilities. Basic campervan pitches (autocamperplads) start from €10–15.
    • Fuel: diesel costs around €1.80–2.20 per litre. Thanks to Denmark's short distances, fuel costs are manageable — budget €100–150 per week.
    • Bridge tolls: the Storebælt Bridge costs roughly €40 one way for a campervan. The Øresund Bridge (to Sweden) is around €55. Register online in advance for a discount.
    • Groceries: supermarket prices are 10–20% higher than in the UK. Discount chains like Netto, Rema 1000 and Lidl offer good value. Bring basics from home to save.
    • Rental campervan: expect from €90–130 per day in peak season, depending on the type and pick-up location.

Rule of thumb: a two-week campervan trip through Denmark costs on average €1,800–3,000 for two people, depending on whether you own or rent. That includes campsites, fuel, tolls and groceries — noticeably cheaper than Norway.
