Norway is one of Europe's best countries for a campervan road trip. Fjords, mountain passes, ferries and remote wilderness all connect naturally when you're on four wheels. But the country is huge and distances are deceiving — the right route depends mainly on how long you've got and where you're starting from. On this page we help you choose from 4 curated campervan routes, compare regions and trip lengths, and share honest tips on ferries, campsites and costs. Everything is drawn from 99 destinations and more than 404 campsites across Norway.

    Norway campervan routes: 7, 10, 14 or 21 days

The most important step when planning a motorhome route through Norway is being honest about how much time you have. Norway is long and narrow — from Bergen to the North Cape is over 1,800 km — and winding coastal roads plus ferry crossings mean you'll cover fewer miles per day than on a motorway. Below you'll see which route fits your trip length. Our standard itineraries range from 1 to 3 weeks, but every route is fully customisable: add or remove stops and adjust the duration to match your plans.

    • 7 days — Southern Norway and the fjords

With a week, focus on the most accessible stretch: the west coast around Bergen, the Sognefjord and Jotunheimen National Park. Compact, but you'll see the best of fjord country.

      Short Fjord Route — Norway in a Nutshell(7 days · 748 km · 5 stops)

Who it's for: travellers with limited time who want the highlights of the fjords. Good to know: compact route with short daily drives — a great first-time motorhome trip.

This route is fully customisable — adjust the duration, stops and order to suit your plans.

Views over the Sognefjord — a highlight of the 7-day campervan route through Southern Norway
The Sognefjord — Norway's longest and deepest fjord
    • 10 days — see more, make choices

With ten days you can extend the fjord route with extra stops, or head north instead. A northern itinerary does mean longer driving days.

      Arctic Circle Adventure — Lofoten & North Cape(9 days · 1,953 km · 8 stops)

Who it's for: adventurous travellers who want to combine Lofoten and the North Cape. Good to know: long driving distances — allow plenty of time and expect fewer facilities along the way.

This route is fully customisable — adjust the duration, stops and order to suit your plans.

The fishing village of Reine on the Lofoten Islands — a destination on the 10-day campervan route through Northern Norway
Reine on the Lofoten Islands — spectacularly set between mountains and sea
    • 14 days — the sweet spot for most travellers

Two weeks is the most popular trip length for a Norway campervan road trip. It gives you enough time to go beyond the highlights without spending every day behind the wheel. Our recommendation: take the Short Fjord Route as your base and extend it with extra nights in Eidfjord, Geiranger and the Sognefjord area — or add a detour to Ålesund and Trollstigen. That gives you a full loop through Southern Norway's best scenery at a comfortable pace.

      • Rest days built in — time to explore a fjord by kayak or hike without the clock ticking.
      • Less rushed than 10 days — you don't have to drive every day and can really soak in each stop.
      • Room for detours — discover lesser-known spots that aren't on the standard routes.
      • Travelling with kids? A fortnight gives a calmer pace with a mix of driving days and activity days.

Who it's for: experienced motorhomers who want to combine Norway, Sweden and Finland in one epic road trip. Good to know: serious mileage — averaging 200 km per day over three weeks.

Campervan trip to Norway: Southern Norway or Northern Norway?

Southern Norway is the natural choice for shorter trips. The fjords — Sognefjord, Hardangerfjord, Geirangerfjord — are relatively close together and easily accessible from Bergen or Stavanger. The infrastructure is better, campsites are closer to one another, and you don't need to drive as far to see a lot. Ideal for a 1 or 2-week campervan holiday.

Eidfjord on the Hardangerfjord in Southern Norway — green valleys and waterfalls along the motorhome route
Eidfjord — gateway to the Hardangervidda plateau and the Vøringsfossen waterfall

Northern Norway is wilder and emptier. The Lofoten Islands, Tromsø and the North Cape are spectacular, but the distances are significant. Tromsø to the North Cape alone is 500 km one way. Only head north if you have at least 10 days — preferably longer.

Tromsø in Northern Norway — a popular starting point for campervan routes to Lofoten and the North Cape
Tromsø — the gateway to the Arctic north

Honest advice: Lofoten and the North Cape sound tempting, but if you only have a week, you'll end up spending most of it behind the wheel. Enjoy the southern fjords instead. With two weeks, consider flying to Tromsø and renting a campervan there for a focused northern route.

Getting to Norway: ferry, starting point and campervan hire

The most popular way to reach Norway by motorhome is via Denmark. From Hirtshals, ferries sail to Kristiansand (about 3.5 hours), Bergen (overnight, around 16 hours) and Stavanger. From Kristiansand you can drive straight to the fjords or follow the southern coast towards Bergen.

Own campervan or rental? All our routes work for both. Driving your own vehicle? The ferry from Denmark is the logical choice. Prefer to rent locally? On our platform you can compare campervans at pick-up locations in Oslo, Bergen, Stavanger and Tromsø. That also makes a fly & drive holiday easy: fly to your starting point and hit the road straight away.

Our route planner takes your starting point into account. Starting in Bergen? Your itinerary begins on the west coast among the fjords. Flying into Tromsø? You'll get a route through Northern Norway. The itinerary adjusts automatically to your starting point.

Best time for a motorhome trip to Norway

The best window for a campervan road trip in Norway runs from June through September. Mountain passes like Trollstigen and Dalsnibba are snow-free, campsites are open and the days are long.

June and July are ideal for Northern Norway and the Lofoten Islands. You'll enjoy the midnight sun and nature at its most vibrant. July is the busiest month, though — popular campsites and attractions like Trolltunga can fill up.

Hardangervidda National Park in Norway — a vast mountain plateau perfect for summer campervan trips
The Hardangervidda — Europe's largest mountain plateau, at its best from June to September

August and early September are excellent for the fjords in Southern and Western Norway. The weather is still warm enough, crowds thin out, and by September the landscape puts on its autumn colours. Bear in mind that some mountain passes and campsites begin to close in September.

Travelling with kids? July and August combine the longest days with the warmest temperatures. But don't expect Mediterranean heat — average highs of 15–20°C in the south, cooler further north.

Practical tips for motorhoming in Norway

Distances are deceptive. A 150 km drive in Norway can easily take 3 hours thanks to narrow winding roads, tunnels and car ferries. Plan no more than 200–250 km per day — less if you want to stop and hike. Our routes factor this in with realistic driving times.

Book campsites ahead. In July and August, popular sites can fill up, especially around the Lofoten Islands, Geirangerfjord and Trollstigen. Reserve in advance if you want a guaranteed pitch, or seek out smaller sites away from the hotspots.

Domestic ferries. In the fjord regions, car ferries are part of the road network. They're generally frequent and affordable, but in high season you may face queuing. Check timetables via AutoPASS. The planner factors ferry crossings into the route automatically.

Wild camping. Norway has allemannsretten (the right to roam), but that doesn't mean you can park a motorhome anywhere overnight. Additional restrictions apply to larger vehicles, and popular areas or car parks may have local bans. Always check signage on the spot and opt for an official motorhome stopover or campsite where possible. Our routes include campsite suggestions at every stop.

How much does a campervan trip to Norway cost?

Norway has a reputation for being expensive, but travelling by campervan means your accommodation and kitchen travel with you — which saves a lot. Still, it pays to budget realistically. Here are the main costs:

    • Campsites: expect €25–45 per night for a pitch with electric hook-up and facilities. Basic motorhome stopovers without power start from around €15.
    • Ferries: domestic crossings cost €10–25 per trip (campervan + passengers). The ferry from Denmark to Norway starts at roughly €150 one way.
    • Fuel: diesel costs around €2–2.50 per litre. Budget for consumption of 10–14 litres per 100 km, depending on your vehicle.
    • Tolls: Norway uses AutoPASS toll stations. Register online in advance — it can save you up to 20% on toll charges.
    • Groceries: supermarket prices are 30–50% higher than in the UK. Bring essentials from home to keep costs down.
    • Campervan hire: expect from €100–150 per day in peak season, depending on the vehicle type. With your own motorhome you save on rental but pay more for the ferry.

Rule of thumb: a two-week motorhome trip to Norway typically costs €2,500–4,000 for two people, depending on whether you bring your own vehicle or rent. That includes campsites, fuel, ferries and groceries.
