Motorhome Routes

Slovenia only has a digital vignette; the sticker was abolished in February 2022. Pay attention to the class, because that is where it often goes wrong. Vehicles registered as motorhomes with fixed living installations fall into class 2A, regardless of height above the front axle. Vans and campers without such fixed fittings end up in the more expensive class 2B. What counts is the designation in part 1 of your registration document.

Above 3.5 tonnes the vignette is invalid and distance-based tolling applies via a DarsGo transponder. Anyone entering with such a vehicle must stop at the first DarsGo service point at the border to collect one. Driving on and then being checked costs 300 to 800 euros — the same as driving without a valid vignette.

Buy the vignette online before arrival. Sales points on the Croatian side were reduced in mid-2025, so consider buying the return vignette on the way out. Toll-free detours are not advised: signage is confusing, navigation does not help, and police watch roundabouts and slip roads.

Two practical points. The H5 and H6 expressways between Škofije, Koper and Lucija have been reclassified as main roads: vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes no longer need a vignette there, maximum 90 km/h. Above 3.5 tonnes you still pay via DarsGo. And if you come from Austria through the Karawanken tunnel, that is charged separately, currently around 9 euros.

Standing free outside campsites and designated motorhome areas is not permitted in Slovenia, and this is strictly enforced in the national parks.
