    Overnight rules

Free standing is prohibited in Sardinia, as in the rest of Italy, and enforcement has tightened in recent years. Police, coastguard and the forestry service all act on it, and number plates are photographed so the fine reaches you at home. Amounts run up to around 500 euros.

In practice a distinction is drawn between camping behaviour and simply sleeping over: anyone putting out an awning, chairs and a table is fined faster than someone who stays discreet. Even so, plan on campsites or official motorhome areas. Watch the signage too: some roads are closed to motorhomes, and sand or rough tracks are not feasible with a 7.5 metre semi-integrated.
