Is the ferry worth it? Comparisons per departure port

What sailing costs versus driving — in kilometres, time and comfort.

    IJmuiden–Newcastle vs driving to Scotland

    By ferry

±80 km to the port on the Dutch side + 16.75 h overnight ferry + ±195 km on to Edinburgh

    Driving

±330 km to Calais + Eurotunnel/ferry + ±760 km through England (±1,100 km driving in total)

Saving: ±800–850 driving kilometres and a hotel night — you sleep on board; the ferry costs more in euros but saves fuel (±€150–200) and time

Hoek van Holland–Harwich vs Calais to London

    By ferry

±85 km to Hoek van Holland + 7 h day crossing + ±130 km on the UK side

    Driving

    ±330 km to Calais + 35 min Eurotunnel or a 1.5 h ferry + ±130 km to London

Saving: ±250 driving kilometres less via Hoek; door to door Calais is faster (±6.5 h vs ±10 h) — Calais wins on time, Harwich on comfort and kilometres

To Dublin: land bridge vs direct ferry

    By ferry

Direct: drive to Cherbourg + 19 h crossing (€500–900 in high season), or to Dunkirk + 24 h DFDS crossing (€550–850); no UK ETA needed

    Driving

    Land bridge: Calais + Eurotunnel (€250–520) + ±570 km through Britain + Holyhead–Dublin 3.5 h (€250–450)

Saving: Going direct saves ±600–900 km through Britain, a second check-in and the UK ETA; costs end up similar — the land bridge is more flexible and often faster (±14 h vs ±24–26 h)

    To northern Spain (Santander/Bilbao)

    By ferry

There is no ferry from the Low Countries to Spain; the nearest option is Portsmouth–Santander/Bilbao (±31 h), which first means crossing the Channel — only sensible if Britain is on your itinerary anyway

    Driving

±1,400–1,460 km through Belgium and France (±13.5–14.5 h), the standard route from the continent

Saving: From the continent the ferry saves nothing (it is a detour); from Britain, Portsmouth–Santander saves ±1,300 km through France (±€250–400 fuel and tolls plus two overnight stops)

Reaching Portsmouth (departure port for western Channel and Spain sailings)

    By ferry

    Hoek van Holland–Harwich (7 h) + ±230 km Harwich–Portsmouth

    Driving

±330 km to Calais + Dover crossing + ±250 km to Portsmouth (±580 km driving)

Saving: Via Harwich ±350 km less driving but a longer total journey; via Calais is cheaper and usual if you want to catch a Brittany Ferries sailing the same day

To Oslo: Kiel ferry vs Hirtshals vs driving

    By ferry

Option A: drive to Kiel + Color Line 20 h with a compulsory cabin (€450–900 for a campervan and two, indicative). Option B: drive to Hirtshals + 3¼ h to Kristiansand (€100–350) + 320 km to Oslo

    Driving

    ±1,430 km / ±15 h via Hamburg–Storebælt–Øresund–Gothenburg; tolls for a campervan up to 3.5 t ±€165 (Storebælt €42 + Øresund €125), considerably more above 3.5 t or 10 m

Saving: The Hirtshals route is usually cheapest and most flexible for campervans; Kiel–Oslo saves ±900 km and a hotel night but costs more overall — pick it as a mini cruise

    Kiel → Oslo

    By ferry

20 h non-stop, daily at 14:00, cabin compulsory (€450–900 for a campervan and two in high season, indicative)

    Driving

±1,080 km / ±11.5 h via Storebælt and Øresund (campervan tolls ±€165) or ±1,130 km via the Puttgarden ferry

Saving: The ferry saves ±1,080 km, the tolls, fuel (±€250–350 diesel) and one overnight stop; driving is quicker on the clock

To Stockholm: German ferry ports vs the Danish bridges

    By ferry

    For example Travemünde/Rostock–Trelleborg (6–9 h, €120–350) and then ±600 km through Sweden, or Kiel–Gothenburg + ±470 km

    Driving

±1,650 km / ±17 h via Fehmarn or Jutland and the Øresund bridge (±€165 tolls for a campervan)

Saving: An overnight German–Swedish ferry replaces the Danish tolls and a hotel night; the time difference is small, the comfort gain is not

    Travemünde → Helsinki

    By ferry

Finnlines, 30 h daily; campervan package for two including a cabin €711–968 one way (seasonal, indicative)

    Driving

±2,100 km through Poland and the Via Baltica (LT/LV/EE) + Tallinn–Helsinki 2 h (±€70–180 for a campervan) — 3–4 driving days; driving through Russia is not possible

Saving: The ferry saves 3–4 driving days and ±€400–600 in fuel and campsites; the overland route only makes sense if you want to see the Baltics

    Changed in 2025/2026

Discontinued routes, new operators and withdrawn facilities.

    • Stena Grenaa–Halmstad is gestopt (laatste afvaart 30 april 2026).
