Overnight rules
Since the 2021 amendment to the Portuguese Highway Code, an approved motorhome may stay overnight for a maximum of 48 hours within the same municipality, unless a local by-law forbids it. Overnight stays are explicitly prohibited in Natura 2000 sites, protected nature areas, national parks and zones covered by a coastal management plan, unless signage states otherwise. Fines range from 60 to 300 euros, and from 120 to 600 euros in protected areas.
That affects precisely the finest stretches: Peneda-Gerês, the Serra da Arrábida, the Ria Formosa and virtually the whole Costa Vicentina. Plan on campsites or official motorhome areas there.
