Overnight stays

Sleeping in a lawfully parked motorhome is not prohibited at federal level. But as soon as you put down levelling jacks or roll out an awning it counts as camping, and that is not allowed on the public road. Ghent, Antwerp, Bruges and the City of Brussels explicitly ban overnight stays on the street, and Wallonia directs you to the official aires de motor-homes.

Low-emission zones

Low-emission zones exist only in Antwerp, Ghent and the Brussels-Capital Region. Foreign number plates must register in advance, free of charge; one registration in Ghent also covers Antwerp. Wallonia has no low-emission zone at all.

Tolls and speed limits

• Vignette: none. The only toll is the Liefkenshoek tunnel.
• Outside built-up areas: 70 km/h in Flanders, 90 km/h in Wallonia.

Flanders is urban and compact: short legs between Bruges, Ghent, Antwerp and Leuven, with belfries and beguinages within walking distance of the edge. Wallonia is wooded and hilly — the Ardennes are an hour's drive from the Flemish cities.
