Why this stop
Today you drive the north coast, one of the most remote and rugged stretches of the NC500. Durness is a highlight, with its beaches and caves.
The drive
You follow the A836 and A838 west. The section around Loch Eriboll takes longer than you expect. Drive calmly and do not plan too many extra stops.
Campervan advice
Use passing places properly. Pull in on the left, do not stop for photos and let local traffic through. This is not a place to be in a hurry.
Overnight
Book two nights in Durness if you can. Capacity is limited and the setting is special. Check water, waste disposal and possibly electricity; none of it is a given out here.
Plan B for bad weather
If Durness is full, look for an alternative around Loch Eriboll. That still fits the route well.
