You know the places, but you don't know the route. And above all, you don't know where you may stay. In the most crowded country in Europe, that is the hardest part of motorhome travel: low-emission zones, city centres where a motorhome has no business, and rules that differ from city to city. This guide works it out day by day, from Amsterdam to the Ardennes.

    What travellers say about Camproads

What a difference compared to how I used to plan trips. With Camproads I put together a complete campervan trip in just a few minutes. It's really easy to use and you can adjust everything to your own preferences. Being able to choose your travel pace makes it even better — especially now that we're travelling with a baby for the first time.

Camproads gave me so much inspiration for our campervan trip. The routes are beautiful, with a good balance between nature and cities, and the route generator made planning really easy. It's also very handy that the locations come with plenty of good campsite options, and that you can easily find a campervan that suits your needs and compare prices. That way we could plan everything ourselves and book the campervan directly with the rental company. A lot cheaper than an organised trip!

    Amsterdam

    Stay day
    Departure: flexible
    Why this stop

Amsterdam is both the starting and finishing point of this tour, and immediately fits its theme: water, façades and major museums close together. You stay here for two nights, so there is no need to tick anything off on your arrival day.

    What to do

Leave the motorhome on the edge of the city and continue by tram or train. Start with a relaxed walk through the canal ring. Save the Rijksmuseum and the Anne Frank Huis for tomorrow and end the day in the Jordaan.

    Motorhome advice

Do not drive into the city centre. Find a spot on the edge of Amsterdam and change there to a tram or train. If you have a diesel, note the low-emission zone: at least emission class 5 is required.

    Overnight

Choose a motorhome stopover or campsite on the edge of Amsterdam, outside the low-emission zone and with a good tram or train connection to the centre. You need two consecutive nights in the same place here.

    Plan B for bad weather

If it rains, start indoors with the Rijksmuseum or the Anne Frank Huis. Leave the canal-side walk until a drier moment.

What makes this guide different from a free blog

    Written for motorhomes

Motorhomes are exempt from the Brussels low-emission zone, but with a foreign registration you must apply for that exemption yourself. Processing takes up to 69 days and no answer counts as a refusal. A day pass costs 35 euros, the fine 350 euros.

The rules as they really are

The 80 km/h rule only applies if your motorhome is registered as a commercial vehicle and weighs more than 3,500 kilograms. Both at the same time.

    Including the exceptions

Driving a diesel motorhome in Amsterdam that does not meet the low-emission zone rules? At a campsite inside the A10 ring you get an entry and exit exemption for your arrival and departure day.

    Why it stands alone

219 pages against 128 for Denmark, two countries and 26 city guides. That is why this is a special edition and not part of the series.
