Arrive early for the castle
Why this stop
Ludwig II’s fairy-tale castle is the best-known image of Germany. The day is about timing: arrive early, because tickets and the parking areas at Hohenschwangau fill up quickly in high season.
The drive
A short stage to Hohenschwangau. You leave the motorhome in the large visitor car park; the castle is reached on foot, by shuttle bus or by horse-drawn carriage.
Campervan advice
Park in the designated motorhome parking areas in the village and do not drive up the narrow road to the castle. Book your entrance ticket online in advance.
Overnight
Stay overnight around Füssen. That way you are at the castle early and can head calmly into the Allgäu afterwards. Check water and waste disposal before you drive on.
Plan B for bad weather
With low cloud the castle disappears into the mist. Explore Füssen and the Wieskirche first and push Neuschwanstein back a day.
