Ferry or drive on? Do the maths

    Departure port & check-in

The desk opens 2 hrs before departure and closes 15 min before departure; Scandlines advises being there 30 min before departure, particularly during the summer holidays. With up to 39 sailings a day and a 45-minute crossing, this is more a moving bridge than a classic ferry: you stay in the queue, drive on and are off again in no time. Prices are set on the basis of both the length and the height of your motorhome, from around €48.

    Facilities at the terminal

    • Fresh water

      Included at Campingplatz Puttgarden.

    • Chemical toilet

Chemical toilet emptying included at Campingplatz Puttgarden.

    • Showers

At the campsite, €0.50 per shower.

    • Fuel

Petrol stations on Fehmarn along the E47 and B207; it is wise to fill up in Germany, as Danish fuel is dearer.

    • Gas & LPG

Campingplatz Puttgarden has a gas bottle service.

    • Groceries

A shop at the campsite; supermarkets in Burg auf Fehmarn (±15 km).

Where to spend the night before departure

    • Campingplatz Puttgarden, Am Belt 1001, 23769 Fehmarn-Puttgarden

      Campsite
      Distance to terminal
      ±1 km
      Price per night
pitch €12-15 plus €6 per adult and €2 visitor tax; electricity €3 per day; shower €0.50; dog €3

      Overnight stays allowed

Right by the ferry port, 70 pitches. Water, waste water and chemical toilet disposal are included in the pitch price; wifi available. There is a shop, restaurant, gas bottle service and a boat slipway. Open from early April to mid-October, check-in 12:00-19:00. The site is largely level, partly shaded and close to the sea.

    Practical tip

In a severe storm the service can be suspended temporarily - relevant for tall motorhomes and caravans on the Fehmarnbelt. The Fehmarnbelt tunnel is under construction but has no effect on the ferry service until it opens. Book online in advance: that is usually cheaper than at the quayside.

    Arrival & first stop

    First motorhome stop after arrival

    • Maribo Sø Camping, Maribo (Lolland)

      Campsite
      Distance to terminal
      ±30 km
      Price per night
      Not known

      Overnight: check in advance

On the lake at Maribo, the best-known campsite in the immediate area around Rødbyhavn; practical if you would rather not press on to Copenhagen after an evening sailing.

    Fuel, gas & LPG

LPG autogas has limited availability in Denmark; Danish gas bottles (Kosan) cannot be exchanged for German ones. Fill or exchange in Germany.

    Watch out on arrival

From Rødbyhavn you join the E47 straight away: about 2 hrs to Copenhagen, or north towards the Øresund Bridge (toll) or the Helsingør-Helsingborg ferry to Sweden. In Denmark dipped headlights are compulsory by day, the drink-drive limit is strict and there are fixed speed cameras on the E47. Drive on the right, so no switching over.

    Practical tip

Denmark has good autocamperpladser through the DK-Camp network; Lolland and Falster have several along the E47.

    Border, documents & rules

Germany-Denmark is EU and Schengen; there is no permanent border control, but Denmark carries out spot checks from time to time. No customs quotas; the EU indicative quantities for alcohol and tobacco apply. Travelling on to Norway does change that: hard quotas apply there.

    Motorhome tips

The Fehmarnbelt tunnel is under construction (planned ±2029) — until then the ferry keeps sailing; gas bottles closed
