Ferry or drive on? Do the mathsDeparture port & check-in
Be there at least 60 min before departure; 90 min is wiser at weekends, during school holidays or if you are travelling with a motorhome, children or pets. Crucial detail: the terminal is NOT in Dunkirk but in Loon-Plage, roughly 20 km to the west. Put 'DFDS Loon Plage' or the exact port address into your sat nav - 'Dunkirk' will send you to the town centre or the coast.
Facilities at the terminal
-
Fresh water
Not at the terminal in Loon-Plage. The nearest reliable drinking water: the Gravelines aire (€2 per 100 l) or Bray-Dunes; the aire in central Dunkirk has had no working water for a long time.
-
Chemical toilet
Disposal at the aires in Dunkirk (Rue des Chantiers de France), Gravelines and Bray-Dunes; not at the terminal.
-
Showers
No showers at the terminal or at the aires; there are showers at Camping La Licorne and at the campsites in Bray-Dunes and Gravelines.
-
Fuel
Petrol stations in Loon-Plage and Grande-Synthe along the D601; none on the port site itself.
-

Arguably the best free pre-boarding spot in all of north-west Europe: 30 places on lit, marked-out tarmac, right beside the DFDS ticket desk and check-in, 24/7 toilets in the terminal building, wifi and waste containers. 4.54/5 from 84 reviews. DFDS staff permit overnight stays; some motorhome owners check in during the evening and clear border control there and then, before sleeping in the lane until departure. No water or electricity, and virtually no facilities nearby - do your shopping beforehand.
-
Aire de Gravelines, Rue de la Gendarmerie
Motorhome aire- Distance to terminal

- Price per night
- water €2 per 100 litres

Accessible daily with card payment; cassette emptying plus grey and black water disposal. Handy when the Dunkirk aire has no water. There are also 50 paid places on the Quai des Islandais and 15 free places at Le Parc des Rives de l'Aa.

±20 places, open all year, black and grey water disposal and containers, but the fresh water has been out of order for a long time according to several recent reviews. Two levels with a considerable slope - levelling blocks are essential. No toilets, showers or electricity. Close to the beach at Malo-les-Bains and the Dunkerque 1940 museum. Reports of rats and of a payment machine that does not work.

18 places with an electricity hook-up, parking, waste disposal and a launderette. On the Belgian border, so it only makes sense if you are coming from the east.
The route is particularly attractive if you travel by motorhome and would rather not join the crush at Calais: a calmer site, shorter queues, and the free car park next to the check-in makes an early sailing possible without a hotel night. The crossing takes about 2 hrs. Here too, lock every hatch and the garage because of the stowaway checks.

Border, documents & rules
A UK ETA is compulsory (£20, two years). Juxtaposed controls: British border control plus French exit checks and EES in Loon-Plage before boarding. Several motorhome owners report that you can already check in and clear control during the evening and then wait in the lane - which saves a lot of time in the morning.
Motorhome tips
No foot passengers; the 2 hrs crossing leaves time for a meal on board; DFDS gas rules: max 3 bottles / 47 kg, jerry cans prohibited
