THE km saver from NL/BE/FR: Utrecht→Sète is ±1,250 km instead of ±2,500 km to Algeciras — saves ±1,250-1,450 driving kilometres each way, 2-3 driving days, fuel and tolls; in exchange for ±40 hrs at sea

Ferry or drive on? Do the maths

    Departure port & check-in

Be in the port at least 3 hrs before departure - the longest check-in time of any corridor here, because this is a long international crossing with full customs and passport handling for a non-EU destination. Keep your passport, boarding pass and the vehicle's insurance papers to hand. The crossing takes roughly 38 to 40 hrs over some 1,070 km, with 2 to 3 sailings a week.

    Facilities at the terminal

    • Fresh water

Top up water at the Aire des 3 Digues (included in the price).

    • Chemical toilet

Disposal at the Aire des 3 Digues.

    • Showers

No showers at the aire; there are public toilets.

    • Fuel

Petrol stations in Sète and along the A9; fill up before Morocco.

    • Gas & LPG

GPL is widely available in France with the French Dish adapter; fill up here, because you will not manage it in Morocco.

    • Groceries

Supermarkets in Sète - the last big shop before nearly two days at sea plus Morocco.

Where to spend the night before departure

    • Aire de camping-car des 3 Digues, Sète

      Motorhome aire
      Distance to terminal
      ±4 km
      Price per night
      low season (Nov-Feb) €8 per 24 hrs; shoulder season (Mar-May, Oct) €11; high season (Jun-Sep) €13

      Overnight stays allowed

70 to 77 places with direct beach access and a cycle path to the surrounding towns. Water and waste disposal on site, public toilets, and a bread van comes round at about 09:00. The drawbacks travellers consistently mention: noise from the busy road and the railway nearby, very narrow places and little shade in summer (2.98/5 from 856 reviews).

    • Aire de camping-cars 'Aire des Bains', Balaruc-les-Bains

      Motorhome aire
      Distance to terminal
      ±12 km
      Price per night
      Not known

      Overnight stays allowed

A quieter alternative on the Étang de Thau, slightly further from the port.

    Practical tip

An indication of the costs according to French motorhome sources: roughly €650-750 to carry the motorhome, a standard cabin ±€100 and a deluxe cabin €150-200. Treat these as guide prices and ask for a quote, because the fares swing sharply by season and by ferry operator (GNV or Baleària). Check all the motorhome's installations before departure: you are at sea for nearly two full days and the vehicle deck is closed.

    Arrival & first stop

    First motorhome stop after arrival

    • Wild camping and campsites in Morocco

      Car park
      Distance to terminal
      Not known
      Price per night
      Not known

      Overnight: check in advance

Wild camping is legal in Morocco and there is a dense network of cheap campsites with electricity, water, wifi and hot showers. A specific verified spot within 30 km of Tanger Med could not be sourced.

    Fuel, gas & LPG

LPG for vehicles barely exists in Morocco; household gas runs on Moroccan butane bottles with their own pressure regulator.

    Watch out on arrival

The same arrival procedure as from Algeciras: your passport is stamped on board; with a vehicle you drive after disembarking to the customs desks in the 'Automobile Access' zone and then onto the N16. The temporary vehicle declaration, successor to the D16ter since 1 January 2019, is issued there: show your vehicle registration document and passport and you receive a single printed document with the latest exit date six months ahead. Waiting times vary from a quarter of an hour to 2.5 hrs; the scanner is used at random. Drones are prohibited and old maps showing Western Sahara as a dotted line are confiscated.

    Practical tip

The advantage of Sète over Algeciras is that you skip the whole drive through Spain and arrive directly in northern Morocco; the drawback is the price and the low frequency. Book well ahead, because motorhome spaces on board are limited.

    Border, documents & rules

A passport valid for at least six months, a vehicle registration document in your own name (authorisation with a hired motorhome), and a green card or Moroccan insurance. France is a Schengen exit with EES registration; Morocco is a third country with its own import restrictions on alcohol, drones and certain printed matter. The temporary vehicle declaration is valid for six months and must be handed in when you leave.

    Motorhome tips

Book at least 1-2 months in advance (Marhaba); check-in ±4 hrs before departure; avoid the peak days late July–±25 Aug and the return peak late Aug–early Sep
